AIAD, Italian Industries Federation for Aerospace, Defence and Security
AIAD is the Federation that represents the Italian Companies for Aerospace, Defence and Security. It includes almost all the national enterprises that operate with advanced technology in the design, production, research and services activities for the civil and military aerospace, military navy and army sectors. It acts as the point of reference for all the national and foreign institutions for the coordination of all those activities in which there is a need to represent the sector’s national interest. It draws and submits reports together with industrial positions to the different government bodies and to any other foreign institutional organization. AIAD provides a significant contribution to the development of the sector’s plans that will be developed by the Defence bodies and/or other Government Administrations that deal with research or innovation, procedure, technical and contract guidelines. There is a strong cooperation with the Secretariat General of Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Economical Development, University and Scientific Research. Furthermore AIAD is the actor of the intensive promotional activities abroad, both to coordinate the Italian participations to the most important international events and to organize and direct not only the mission of our enterprises abroad but also the visits of foreign delegations in Italy.

ARESYS S.r.l., Advanced Remote-Sensing Systems, is an Italian SME spin-off of “Politecnico di Milano”, providing solutions since 2003 to the aero-space & defense, oil & gas and industrial markets. It designs and develops ad-hoc innovative monitoring solutions, at HW & SW level, exploiting cutting-edge sensing technologies like microwave Radar/SAR and optical imaging, seismic surveys and vibroacoustic sensors. Based in Milan, ARESYS is divided in four business units, each of them covering specific technologies and markets. e-GEOS, Italian Space Agency and Telespazio company, is a leading international player in the Earth Observation and Geo-Spatial Information business. e-GEOS is the exclusive global distributor for the COSMO-SkyMed and COSMO Second Generation data, the most advanced and performing Radar Satellite constellation available today. Through the Matera Space Centre e-GEOS acquires, processes, stores and distributes remotely sensed data from the main Earth observation satellites, produces images, products and services in near real-time for maritime surveillance. In the frame of MetOp SG-A mission, Leonardo Spa of Campi Bisenzio, Italy, is leading a large Industrial Team – including more than 10 subcontractors – for developing an imaging radiometer called 3MI (Multi-viewing, Multi-channel, Multi-polarization Imaging).
PHM (Passive Hydrogen Maser) is the atomic clock used for precise positioning, timekeeping and other onboard applications. Designed to operate in space for more than 12 years, it offers an outstanding stability. PHM, fully developed and tested by Leonardo SpA. is the master clock of the Galileo Navigation Satellite System, and already on orbit with more than 40 units
Cheops is ESA's CHaracterising ExOPlanet Satellite. It is the first mission dedicated to studying bright, nearby stars that are already known to host exoplanets, in order to make high-precision observations of the planet's size as it passes in front of its host star. Leonardo SpA has been in charge of the optical payload development.
DEDALO is a passive Drone DEtection system able to recognize and localize drones analyzing electromagnetic emissions through a radio frequency ( sensing It provides real time alert of Unknown Slow Movers Unmanned Air Vehicles UAV enabling a rapid and coordinated response.
Leonardo has been in charge of the development, manufacturing and integration of the multi-rod drill unit system for this mission, as well as the miniaturized spectrometer for the rock samples in-situ analysis.
The risk of intentional and unintentional emissions and interactions has increased rapidly in the last year. Our solution is ideal for tracing intentional or unintentional
interference as well as potentially dangerous signal sources.
The JUICE spacecraft will carry the most powerful remote sensing, geophysical, and in situ payload complement ever flown to the outer Solar System.
The payload consists of 10 state-of-the-art instruments plus one experiment that uses the spacecraft telecommunication system with ground-based instruments. This payload is capable of addressing all of the mission's science goals, from in situ measurements of Jupiter's atmosphere and plasma environment, to remote observations of the surface and interior of the three icy moons, Ganymede, Europa and Callisto.
The remote sensing package, developed by Leonardo SpA, includes imaging (JANUS) and spectral-imaging capabilities from the ultraviolet to the sub-millimetre wavelengths (MAJIS, UVS, SWI).
Mounted on the MTG-Imager satellites, the Lightning Imager, developed by Leonardo SpA, will provide a new capability for European meteorological satellites. It provides a continuous monitoring of more than 80% of the Earth disc for detecting lightning discharges taking place either between clouds or from cloud and ground.
ESA selected the PLATO mission in February 2014 on the recommendation of the Space Science Advisory Committee as the third Medium-Class science mission within ESA's Cosmic Vision Program, following the selection of the Solar Orbiter and Euclid projects in 2011 as ESA's first M-class missions.
Leonardo SpA is in charge of the development of the 26 telescopes to be integrated on the spacecraft.
As a key player in Photovoltaic Assembly (PVA) design and manufacturing, the PhotoVoltaic Asembly developed by Leonardo SpA are installed on most of the ESA and ASI programmes: Rosetta, ATV, Herschel and Planck, ADM-Aeolus, LISA Pathfinder, Exomars 2016 and 2018, Exomars ROVER, Orion(NASA) and JUICE.
